Action v Result

Modern humans are an impatient lot, with an ever-shrinking attention span. Sudden, quick results are portrayed by the media as the norm rather than the exception. Till about the year 1800 AD life was very static and predictable. The idea of economic growth and progress as we see it today did not exist.

Our bodies and minds are built for stable, routine work, which is often hard to see in our current environment. And this brings in the need for systems and habits that help create long term value. Society is obsessed with goals and the next big thing, when success is the result of meticulous processes that are followed irrespective of external reward.

Consistency is the only way. Think of athletes going through their workouts whether there is a race on the horizon or not. The return is far in the future and that is not the sole motivator. The journey is its own reward.

Scott Adams said “Set up systems, not goals”. This is echoed by James Clear in ‘Atomic Habits’ and nicely illustrated in ‘The Almanac of Naval Ravikant’ (see attached image)
