The Khan of Equity

The Mongol Empire was the largest in world history.

Genghis Khan’s progressive policies and leadership had a lot to do with the effective management of a powerful Army, especially on campaigns thousands of miles from home. For instance, the spoils of every war were divided among the soldiers based on a transparent system of reward. Even the lowest ranked soldier knew what percentage of the winnings would be his, if he did his job and contributed to victory.

Fairness and equity are traits we intrinsically value as a social species. The tribal lifestyle that humans evolved in, relied heavily on everyone doing their part. Trust in the system and those managing it was critical for it to work.

We see this tribal mindset reflect in modern corporations too. When it comes to our peer groups, we have no problems with someone else getting promoted or getting paid better if we see it as a fair outcome.

To get the best out of your people, ensure clear policies and equitable treatment of everyone. This can unleash entrepreneurial spirit like nothing else.
